Equilibrium yield of a gas-phase solvent synthesis

1

A pilot plant is evaluating corlistol (C), a low-odour degreasing solvent. It forms by gas-phase addition of corvene (A) to listane (B): A(g) + 2 B(g) ⇌ C(g) In a screening study, a feed containing only A and B in a 1:2 mole ratio was passed over a catalyst bed held at a set temperature and total pressure. The outlet was sampled repeatedly until its composition no longer changed between samples, and the mole fraction of C was then recorded (Table 1). Under these conditions all species behave as ideal gases and no other products were detected. The catalyst is assumed to change only how quickly equilibrium is reached.

2

Relationship

Kp = p_C / (p_A × p_B²). Each equilibrium partial pressure is in bar, so Kp has units of bar⁻². For each species, p_i = x_i × P, where x_i is the mole fraction of that species and P is the total pressure in bar. For an ideal-gas mixture, Kp for this reaction depends only on temperature.

Table 1. Equilibrium mole fraction of C (x_C) in the outlet for the 1:2 A:B feed, at temperatures of 480 K, 520 K and 560 K and at total pressures P = 2.0 bar, 5.0 bar and 10.0 bar.

Frequently asked questions

Is GAMSAT Pro affiliated with ACER or the official GAMSAT?

No. GAMSAT Pro is an independent practice product. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by ACER, which writes and runs the GAMSAT. For official information, registration and dates, use gamsat.acer.org.

Are these real GAMSAT questions?

No. Every passage, dataset and question is original and written for practice. We study the official ACER practice tests to understand the format and difficulty, but we never copy or closely paraphrase their questions, passages or figures.

What can I expect from the practice questions?

Original practice material with guided hints, worked explanations and reasoning for each answer option. We use AI to help create and review content, check it before publication and improve it using learner feedback. You can try the free samples to see whether the approach suits you.

Will it predict my GAMSAT score?

No. We show your raw accuracy, time, and whether you used hints, so you can see what to work on. We do not convert practice results into an estimated GAMSAT score, and no practice product can guarantee a result.

Does the Section 2 writing feedback give me a mark?

No. Feedback is qualitative: it quotes your own sentences, names two priorities to work on and gives one revision exercise. You can revise and compare versions side by side. It is AI-generated feedback, not an official or human mark.

What can I do for free?

You can try a sample of guided practice units with hints and full explanations. A free full-length practice test is included once mock tests launch. Paid plans unlock the full bank, timed blocks and writing feedback.

How does the "until your exam" pass work?

It is a single payment that gives full access until results come out for the sitting you choose, plus a short grace period. It is priced at a discount to paying monthly for the same months, and it does not renew. The pricing page shows the exact amount for each sitting.

How many questions are there?

The bank is growing every week. Each unit is a passage, dataset or experiment with four questions, hints, a worked solution and an explanation for every option. Section 3 has the most units today, and Section 1 is growing.
